Electronic Scooter Accident Lawyers in Austin, Texas

Electronic Scooter Accident Attorneys Providing Protection for People Injured in Austin, Texas

Glen Larson Law Injury Attorneys have offices throughout the state of Texas, which provides a firsthand look at the growing scooter market in our large cities, college towns, and smaller municipalities from border to border.

Whether riders are enjoying these micro-mobility opportunities due to their low environmental impact compared to other conventional modes of transport, convenience, or low cost, there is no denying that this booming trend shows no sign of slowing soon.

According to Meticulous Marketing Research, e-scooter revenue is anticipated to rise by 21% by 2023, and the electric scooter market is expected to reach $41.98 billion by 2030.

Like other traffic accident statistics, the more cars, commercial and delivery vehicles, and rideshare drivers we see on our Texas roadways, the more collisions will likely occur.

Scooters are no different. As the number of available units increases, so will rider volume, and inherently, crashes.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported the hazards associated with micro-mobility products like electric scooters primarily fall into three broad areas: mechanical, electrical, and human factors.

How Many People Are Seriously Injured While Riding Scooters in Texas?

In 2021, the National Library of Medicine released a study entitled, “Electric Scooter-Related Injuries: A New Epidemic in Orthopedics” reported nearly 400 patients reporting to emergency rooms across the U.S. after scooter accidents over 12 months: 25% of those patients required surgery for their injuries.

Another 2021 review of e-scooter injury studies estimated that every 100,000 scooter trips resulted in 20 to 25 emergency department visits.

The latest data shows there were more than 190,000 emergency room visits due to all micro-mobility products from 2017 through 2020.

The steady increase in the availability of micro-mobility transportation options, including scooters, correlated to a 70% increase in emergency room trips, including:

  • Total micro-mobility emergency room visits in 2017: 34,000; Scooters only: 7,700
  • Total micro-mobility emergency room visits in 2018: 44,000; Scooters only: 14,500
  • Total micro-mobility emergency room visits in 2019: 54,800; Scooters only: 27,700
  • Total micro-mobility emergency room visits in 2020: 57,800; Scooters only: 25,400*

*Most scooter rental services were suspended during COVID-19 lockdown mandates, which is believed to have impacted the slight decrease in accidents, injuries, and emergency room visits that year.

CPSC is aware of 71 fatalities associated with micro-mobility products from 2017 through 2020, although reporting is incomplete.

What are the Most Common Injuries Associated with Scooter Accidents in Texas?

Scooter operating companies — including the largest providers, Lime and Bird — state that riders should wear helmets while riding, but they are not required by law.

Because the option is left to consumers, it has been reported that fewer than 5% of electric scooter riders wear a helmet. Much like when motorcycle or bicycle accidents occur, the rider’s exposed and vulnerable position creates the potential for serious injuries.

Severe and catastrophic injuries that have been reported during scooter accidents, include:

  • Road rash, scrapes, and bruises
  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Torn tendons, muscles, and ligaments
  • Facial and dental injuries
  • Neck and spine injuries
  • Head injuries, including Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Traumatic orthopedic injuries
  • Internal bleeding
  • Organ damage
  • Scarring and disfigurement
  • Loss of mobility
  • Paralysis

Each of these injuries requires different medical treatment that can leave riders in a difficult financial position and loss of wages from not being able to work.

When these accidents disrupt our clients’ lives, we look to the liable party who caused the injuries or loss of life, so we can help pursue justice on behalf of the victim.
