What is Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)?
Necrotizing Enterocolitis, or NEC, is a serious gastrointestinal condition that causes intestinal tissue death in premature infants.
NEC causes inflammation that may cause holes in the intestine, which allows bacteria from the intestine to leak into the blood or abdomen causing serious illness or deadly blood infections.
Over three decades ago, a study published by the National Library of Medicine reported that NEC was up to ten times more common in premature babies who were given formula.
More recently, additional studies have continued to link cow’s milk-based formula to a higher risk of NEC in premature infants.
In as many as 50% of cases, NEC may be fatal.

Have the Baby Formula Manufacturers or the FDA Issued Enfamil and Similac Recalls?
Enfamil and Similac have not been recalled for causing NEC.
However, in February 2022, isolated store recalls were issued for product tampering that was linked to potential bacterial infections.
The FDA evaluated the formula in question and declared it safe.
In February 2022, Abbott Nutrition recalled certain batches of Similac, EleCare, and Alimentum manufactured at its Sturgis, Michigan facility that caused bacterial infections, Salmonella poisoning, and death in multiple infants.
The FDA and Abbott are still investigating.
