April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Our Glen Larson Law Injury Attorneys in Texas know firsthand that distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roadways. Whether it is cellphone use, including talking, texting, and social media updates, onboard electronics, passenger disruptions, or simply daydreaming behind the wheel, distracted driving impacts a motorist’s ability to respond to a potential crash in time to avoid it. One of the fastest growing safety issues on the roads today, distracted driving is a threat to the driver who is not paying attention, the occupants of his or her vehicle, other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and road workers alike.

Join us in observing Distracted Driving Awareness Month and help everyone get home safely.

Distracted Driving Impacts Everyone on Our Texas Roadways: Here is How to Avoid This Dangerous Behavior

Distracted Driving Awareness

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and is designed to bring awareness to the fact that any distraction behind the wheel is dangerous for everyone.

The National Safety Council reports at least eight people a day are killed in distracted driving crashes, matching the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration’s statistics that distracted driving killed 3,522 people last year alone.

To help keep yourself, and our Texas communities safe, follow these tips to avoid distracted driving.

While you are still parked:

  • Program your route.
  • Set up your music or podcast.
  • Respond to any text messages or emails.
  • Silence and put away your phone.

If you must make a call, send a text, or reroute your GPS, ask a passenger for help or pull over safely before making any changes. If you are struggling with the temptation to use your cell phone while driving, place it in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.

This is true for professional drivers, too. Commercial, delivery, and company vehicle operators should also pull over, or wait to place their vehicles in drive before using dispatching devices and mobile data terminals.

It takes all of us to keep each other safe on our Texas roadways. Let’s remove the distractions, and look out for each other, so we can all make it home safely.
